CARING offers health services at Salvation Army for 19th year

LA CROSSE, WI – A collaborative program that brings together soon-to-be nurses with health service professionals to serve people in need is nearing the half way point of its 19th year.

CARING first started in the year 2000 as a partnership between The Salvation Army, Viterbo Univeristy and the La Crosse County Health Department. Each fall and spring semester, Viterbo nursing students offer preventative health services free to those that are utilizing services at The Salvation Army. The student nurses are overseen by a Public Health Nurse from the La Crosse County Health Department and an advisor from Viterbo University.

“We provide the public with free health education, disease screenings, care management, and make referrals for acute care,” said Sheryl Jacobson of Viterbo University. “We’re seeing more people with mental health and substance abuse needs compared to when we first started. Along with providing services to these patients, students are also benefiting by learning inter-professional collaboration.”

All Viterbo senior nursing students eventually rotate through the program to satisfy their public health course for their degrees. The program runs for 22 weeks out of the academic year.

“CARING provides their clients with information and services that would be difficult for them to get anywhere else,” said Nick Ragner of The Salvation Army. “How can we expect someone to reach sustainability if they have lingering health needs or don’t understand how to properly take care of themselves? This program helps us accomplish that.”
